Against possession of an automobile radar detector. It seems ridiculous, or even perverse, to pay a police force to enforce speeding laws and at the same time allow possession of a device used for the sole purpose of preventing detection of and punishment of those who are breaking those laws.
Against failure to return shopping carts to the "catchers" provided on the parking lots or in the stores. Damage to vehicles is apparent, and the carelessness observed in some cases even appears to be intentional. Some will not even walk the width of a car to secure the cart. The potential for other personal and property damage is also there as the wind propels them along or as they are bumped by vehicles or pedestrians.
Against exposure of children to the use of or advertising for alcohol, tobacco, or other non-medicinal, harmful drugs. These actions should be designated as child abuse. Alcohol and tobacco probably cause more deaths, physical and mental problems, family destruction, financial problems, and various other personal and family problems than all the other abused, harmful drugs combined. They are promoted in use and in advertising as the "manly," "feminine," "sexy," "grown-up," "sophisticated," "socially accepted," product to use. There are many other appealing adjectives used to lure the young (and even the not-so-young) to their addictive and destructive use. When their use is practiced by influential and visible adults, the lure is especially compelling. Society at-large pays a large portion of the destructive and financial tab, and many of the victims are innocent of involvement in the practices. [Early 2001]
